Shepherd Craft is an intricate tribal art form. It's simply free-form embroidery, practiced by Bakarwal women. It's a productive pastime activity during which they create stuff like embroidered pouches, clutches, saddle cloth, wall-hangings, slings, thailas and much more. It is said that Bakarwal women choose color according to their mood, or what they are wearing that day. Bakarwal men tend, feed and guard flocks of sheep and goats, to earn their livelihood by trading wool.
Bakarwals are basically a nomadic community of shepherds who have lived the ancient lifestyle for centuries. They lead tough lives in the high altitude meadows of the Himalayas. Consequently, like many ancient art forms, Shepherd Craft is also heading toward extinction.
