Things we forget

Ghada or earthen pot was used to contain water and keep it cool during the summers. In rural India, it is still used for that purpose. But if were born after 1995, in a city, there is a good chance that you haven't seen this object for real. With the advent of Refrigerator and Water Cooler, Ghada or Earthern Pot ceased to find space in the household, even though all it needed was a small corner.

Ghada is one of the wonders of the yesteryears. It kept water cold without electricity, and during hot summers. In fact, hotter the air outside, cooler the water inside the pot.

Scientifically, this is how it works. In the earthen pot there are numerous tiny pores through which water seeps and makes a layer outside. This layer evaporates by absorbing heat from inside the pot. That is what makes the temperature inside the pot drop. Apart from that, air is a bad conductor of temperature. And so is the clay of the pot.

Apart from being a water container, Ghada is also used as a Musical Instrument.

In old times, it also used to serve the purpose of a life saving object. Because of the air inside the pot, you could fit it under your belly and swim through water very easily.
