Bhangra and Giddha are two predominant and more famous dance forms of Panjab. But there are many more folk dance forms originating from Panjab region than just these two, namely Luddi, Sammi, Kikli and Jhoomar. Each one these has its own style and history. Here goes...
Luddi is dance of victory and triumph. Exuberant and vivacious males perform this dance with their one hand on back and other on face. Their apparels comprise of kurta pajama and their movements are snakelike.
Sammi was a village girl with a sad story. Her lover left her. Sammi performers usually wear very bright colored kurtas and lehngas and are adorned with heavy jewellery. Folk songs
Kikli is performed by pairs oh girls, holding hands with crossed arms, revolve at high speeds. Usually a group of girls surround these two performers and girls take turns to perform Kikli. As they rotate, their colorful duppattas (also called chunnis) swirl in air, making it a very active and graceful dance form.
Jhoomar originates from Sandalbar and is a dance form in which men dance gracefully around a Drummer, singing songs. Another peculiar aspect of this dance form is that sometimes men also ride their horses and camels and make them dance too.
