Stapoo was the most favorite pastime of Panjabi children. Primarily it was played by little and teenage girls, but many
young boys also took part in it very enthusiastically. Unlike today's game boxes, Stapoo cost nothing and required only two small things. A piece of chalk
or coal to draw the playing court and a square or round piece of flat stone, to
use as the playing object.
Just like today's generation can't get over texting and
Facebooking, children of the yesteryears couldn't just stop playing Stapoo.
These games usually started on streets and playgrounds at about 6pm, as children gathered in groups after finishing their homework. The children came home only when dinner was ready and mothers had started shouted at them!
The charm of Stapoo is unforgettable. And to bring those glorious childhood days back to
life, just look for a chalk and a flat stone on a lazy Sunday evening.
